EPOS vs Traditional Till: What's Right For Your Pub?

A till counts money. An EPOS counts the business. Whether you need the second one depends on questions that have nothing to do with technology.

There is a version of this article that tells you every pub needs an EPOS system. It is not true, and you would spot it. Some pubs are better off with a good till and a tidy cash-up. The difference is not the size of the pub. It is what you cannot currently answer about it.

What a traditional till does well

A till is fast, simple, and almost impossible to break. Staff learn it in an afternoon. There is no menu build, no updates, and nothing to go wrong at eight on a Saturday. If you serve drinks, a short food menu, and you can hold your stock in your head, a till is not a compromise. It is a sensible choice.

What a till cannot tell you

It can tell you what came in. It cannot usually tell you these things.

  • Which twelve dishes make you money and which two are just busy.
  • What your takings look like by hour, so you can staff Thursday properly.
  • Whether wet or dry sales carried last month.
  • Which member of staff voided what, and when.
  • How much stock you are losing between delivery and glass.

Where EPOS earns its keep in a pub

Three situations make the case almost on their own. Table service, because orders reaching the kitchen correctly is the difference between a good night and a bad review. Food volume, because gross profit per dish is where the margin actually lives. And staff numbers, because permissions and audit trails matter more the less often you are behind the bar yourself.

The fourth is a second site. The moment you have two, you need to compare them without adding up two sets of paper.

The honest objections

EPOS costs more than a till, and it needs a proper build. A menu with the wrong modifiers is worse than no system at all, because your team will work around it. It also needs someone to look at the reports. A system nobody reads is an expensive till with more buttons.

A simple way to decide

Write down the three questions about your pub you most want answered next month. If a till can answer them, keep the till. If they are about margin, staffing patterns or stock, an EPOS will pay for itself faster than you expect.

We are happy to talk you out of one. If you want to walk through it for your venue, book a call and bring last month's figures.
