A Village Pub Switched And Stopped Paying Rental

Paying rental on two terminals plus a rate that had crept up over four years.

~£1,800

Estimated annual saving

The situation

A food-led village pub with a bar terminal and a portable for table service. Both were rented monthly. The rate agreed four years earlier had been increased twice by written notice, and neither notice had been noticed.

The landlord's instinct was that the cost had grown, but the statement made it hard to prove. Rental, PCI and a minimum service charge were on separate lines from the transaction charges.

What we did

We worked out the effective rate including every fee, then quoted like for like against it. Both terminals were replaced with free units, so the rental disappeared entirely rather than being folded into the rate.

The changeover was scheduled for a Tuesday morning and tested before service. The old terminals stayed on site until the new ones had taken live payments.

The outcome

Rental and the minimum monthly charge both went to zero, and the transaction rate came down against a turnover that sits above the tier boundary. On last year's takings the saving works out at roughly £1,800 across the year.

The landlord has a mobile number rather than an account line, and the rate is reviewed rather than left to drift.
